In-home caregivers, need to get away? There are facilities that provide short-term care for the elderly. This is a solution for those times when you'd like to get away on vacation or just need some time to yourself. Of course, one option would be to hire a professional caregiver, for 24/7 if necessary. But that would quickly get very expensive.
A less costly solution is available through assisted-living facilities that offer short-term stays. One nation-wide company that does this is "Sunrise Senior Living" (www.sunriseseniorliving.com). They have nearly 400 residences in the US and Canada. For about $150 per day, Sunrise will provide a room, meals, daily housekeeping, laundry and bathing assistance. Medical staff are on-site.
Another is "Emeritus Senior Living" ( www.emeritus.com. They have nearly 300 residences in 35 states. Most of their residences offer this service, called "Short-Stay Respite." Their daily rates run from $100 to $200 per day, depending on region and services provided. From their website: "Your loved one may want to take advantage of this option for several reasons:
He or she is thinking about moving into an Emeritus senior living community, but wants to fully experience the Emeritus senior housing lifestyle before making a final decision.
He or she is being discharged from a hospital or nursing home, but still need some extra help to ease the transition home.
A family member or elder caregiver is going away on vacation, and your loved one needs a temporary place to live while they get a well-deserved break."
A third is "Classic Residences by Hyatt" (www.hyattclassic.com), with 21 residences in 11 states (7 in Florida alone). Daily rates for a private apartment with similar services will run about $200.
Contact each company directly. Be aware that this type of short-term service is subject to room availability.
